Hamilton Hotels To Curb Late Arrivals

IN a unified approach, hotel licensees in the Beaumont Street, Hamilton, precinct have agreed to voluntarily introduce a 2am restricted entry policy.

Australian Hotels Association (AHA) NSW operations director Andrew Fletcher said that yesterday's meeting of the Hamilton hoteliers was about being proactive and finding local solutions.

Mr Fletcher said they agreed to bring in the policy from next weekend.

The voluntary restricted-entry policy means late night revellers will have to be at their desired night spot by 2am, or risk being locked out.

Entry will not be granted to licensed premises after 2am.

The hotels, including The Gateway, Kent, Sydney Junction, Exchange, Northern Star and Hamilton Station, had also agreed in principle to a number of other measures, including not serving shots and strong, ready-to-drink alcopops late in the night.

Mr Fletcher said the 2am restricted entry aimed to reduce the movement of patrons between licensed premises in the early hours of the morning.

The licensees wanted to "make a great part of the city even better".

"They want to keep the flavour of Beaumont Street as a vibrant entertainment precinct and they discussed a range of initiatives to further enhance the visitor experience in the precinct," he said.

Mr Fletcher said the hotels were part of the history of the Hamilton community.

"Beaumont Street's access to rail transport, the ease with which you can wander the street, the cosmopolitan atmosphere, range of cuisine and entertainment makes it one of the 'must sees' for visitors to the city,' Mr Fletcher said.

The hotels provided jobs for almost 200 people, and Mr Fletcher said the hotel operators had consulted other groups, including Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and Newcastle City Council.

Mr Fletcher said the hotels had also considered the issue of security.

They had numerous security cameras inside their premises and would look at new technology to expand the network.

"The hotels also looked at ways of sharing the security network and agreed in principle to investigate the installation of new wireless security camera technology."
