Residents Call Commander On Hotel Hours

Newcastle Herald

Tuesday August 5, 2008

Dan Proudman

RESIDENTS who have lobbied for curfews at late-trading Newcastle hotels want to meet Northern Region commander Lee Shearer over the recent compromise between police and hoteliers on closing hours.

Outspoken inner-city resident Tony Brown has written to Assistant Commissioner Shearer, asking to be included in any discussion on alcohol-related violence in Newcastle.

Mr Brown is seeking police support in opposing the transfer of the liquor licence from the disused Jolly Roger nightclub to the former Kensington Theatre site.

The Herald reported on Saturday that the new owner of the Hunter Street property was pursuing plans to establish a nightclub.
